Typical Applications
- Detection
of Hot Metal or Hot Product in a Rod Mill, Bar Mall, Hot Strip Mill
or other Steel Mill and Industrial Applications.
The All-in-One Self-Contained Hot Metal Detector
(HMD) Sensor is activated by the infrared
energy radiating from hot metal or hot product.
This robust sensor is impervious to water
or steam and built to withstand the harshest steel mill environments.
To accommodate variation in product temperature and background radiation, six specific
infrared (IR) thresholds are selectable by internal DIP switch. All the end user has to select prior to installation is the appropriate lens.
All lenses incorporate filters to minimize sensitivity to extraneous light.

The Model MD8100
Hot Metal Detector's electronic circuitry is packaged in a robust cast aluminum
housing. The housing includes a large air cooled chamber which is
separated from the electronic circuitry compartment. An air inlet is
located in the rear of the cast aluminum housing. Pressurized air passes
though this chamber, cooling the cast aluminum housing thus cooling the
electronic circuitry. The air vents in the front of the housing via a slot in front of the lens providing
air purging. Further cooling of the air can be accomplished with the use
of an in-line vortex tube air cooler.
Also, as an option, a sealed water coolant radiator & separate air purging
facility can be provided. The copper water coolant radiator is mounted
internal to the air cooled chamber. Coolant inlet and outlet fittings
are provided in the rear of the cast aluminum housing. An air inlet is
fitted in the front nozzle of the housing and air is vented out the
front of the nozzle in front of the lens.
